Modernism Week in Palm Springs
By Mike Tauber
Artists, architects, culture gurus and retro-hipsters from across the country will descend on Palm Springs for the fifth annual Modernism Week, taking place Feb. 11 - 21. The 10-day festival, unique to Palm Springs, celebrates the look and style of mid-Twentieth century Americana.
Modernism Week, the only such event in the country, is an exciting homage to the ideals of mid-century modern design, architecture and culture. This design aesthetic, originated in the early 1950s and 60s, was typified by clean, simple lines and celebrated elegant informality which came to define desert modernism.
As has become tradition, this annual event will include a wide variety of engaging public events beginning with the two-day Modernism Show (February 13 and 14) at the Palm Springs Convention Center, preceded by a public Preview Cocktail Reception and Auction on Friday, February 12.
Attendees can participate in a choice of 30 exciting events at various locations throughout the city. Activities include a vintage Airstream trailer show, a 1970s dance party at the Steve McQueen house, a 1950s furniture exhibit at the convention center, a Charles Phoenix pop-culture slideshow, home tours, martinis, films and fashion.
New this year is a “passport program” giving Modernism Week attendees special offers and discounts on meals, hotels, local shopping and services.
